Jayson Tatum refutes narrative that Celtics are a 'superteam'

The Celtics have five current or former All-Stars in their ranks — Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday and Al Horford — to go with another All-Star caliber player in Derrick White. And to boot, they have quality role players such as Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard enjoying career-best seasons.

On paper, that level of talent would constitute a super team.

However, Tatum isn't all for that narrative. Following Boston's Game 2 loss to Cleveland, the star forward explained why the media has placed unrealistic expectations upon his team.

"We get it. The world thinks we're never supposed to lose, we're supposed to win every game by 25. It's just not going to be like that all the time," Tatum told reporters. "...That's the narrative you might see on TV, the idea that we have a super team. It's twofold, right? We didn't have the Coach of the Year or MVP. We only had two All-Stars. They say we're a super team, but we didn't get rewarded like we are. We know we have a good team, we're not perfect, [but] we play the right way. We just gotta be better."

To Tatum's point, Joe Mazzulla was overlooked for Coach of the Year despite leading the Celtics to their most wins since 2007-08, only Tatum and Brown made the All-Star team and neither White nor Holiday finished in the top-three of Defensive Player of the Year honors despite having stellar defensive seasons.

Tatum's comments have led some to believe he is attempting to lower the expectations for his team. Yet the Celtics remain the odds-on favorite to win it all after their fourth 64-win season in franchise history. Boston won the championship in two of the three previous times it reached that threshold of wins.

As such, anything less than a title this year would be deemed a failure.
